In more detail:
Some of SCDC’s achievements to date include some of the main goals from the ReCreate Scalloway public consultation, along with other opportunities and needs that have come along in the years since the ReCreate Scalloway documents were published

  • Secured funding for a feasibility report for on the creation of a business hub amenity in 2024.
  • SCDC worked together with the Scalloway Community Council, Shetland Islands Council and Malakoff Ltd to access funds from the Scottish Government to achieve the demolition of the old derelict Scalloway Youth Centre at Midshore which had become a major eyesore and came out as the top priority in the ReCreate Scalloway community consultation. The demolition project was matched with funds and payment in kind from the Malakoff to clear the asbestos clad property from their yard.
  • Public realm infrastructure improvements in centre of village and around the hall 2019/20, funded by the Scottish Government. Changes to the car park at Da Waterfront were another priority in ReCreate Scalloway and were achieved in collaboration with the Scalloway Youth and Community Centre. Improvements to the curtilage of the Scalloway Public Hall were achieved from the same government funding, with collaboration with Scalloway Public Hall Trust and the Fraser Park Trust.
  • Upgrade of public transport hub – new bus shelter 2020, to provide greater capacity for secondary school children waiting for the morning bus in winter, and early morning commuters, both of which groups were routinely too large to fit in the existing bus stop. This was achieved in collaboration with Shetland Islands Council.
  • A set of 5 orientation boards with a map of Scalloway and key information on local infrastructure, amenities and access, were installed in prominent locations around the village 2020/21.
  • A heritage trail of orientation and interpretive panels were installed in prominent places around the village 2020/21. This was achieved with Scottish Government funding and collaboration with the Scalloway Museum.
  • Managed and distributed Covid funds as an anchor organisation and supporting a food bank 2020-2021
  • Developed the new Scalloway Caravan Park at Asta, which opened in May 2023, after 6 years in the planning, and then continued and carried out enhancements during 2024/25
  • Commissioned a feasibility study of Waterfront and the resulting Destination Scalloway report and Masterplan produced 2021/22. This originated from the ReCreate Scalloway community consultation and was another of the top community priorities found through that exercise.
  • Secured funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to employ a development worker for 3 years 2023.
  • Secured funding for a community transport study 2024. This includes consideration of ideas like provision of a community minibus, if there is a need for it proven through community consultation that is ongoing. The study also considers public footpaths and prescribed Active Travel routes. Ideally we could identify a walking route from the Scalloway Caravan Park to the village.
  • Secured part funding for next stage of Waterfront redevelopment project in 2025. Specialist contractors will create detailed designs of the waterfront area, formed from the outcomes of the previous consultation work and input from planners and civil engineers.
  • Secured part funding for a District Heating Scheme feasibility study 2025. This investigation aims toward provision of a heating network that would benefit homes and businesses in the area.
  • Secured part funding for heritage project – to create and install additional interpretive boards 2025, working again with Scalloway Museum, the Scalloway Youth and Community Centre and other relevant parties to collate interesting and useful information on Scalloway’s history, culture and environment.
