SCDC has a range of significant projects currently active for the benefit of the people of Scalloway and surrounding area.
🌟 Our Aspirations for Scalloway
The Scalloway Community Development Company is working towards a vibrant, sustainable future for our village. Much of our work stems from the ReCreate Scalloway community consultation and the subsequent Destination Scalloway consultation and masterplan. Here’s what we’re aiming for over the next few years:
🌊 Waterfront & Environment
- 2025–2029: Commission detailed designs for the Scalloway waterfront, secure funding and manage construction of infrastructure 2025-2029 to provide improved access, sea defences and environmental improvements. This includes extending the Burn Beach for further parking and improve the waterfront for visitors and locals
🏰 Tourism & Heritage
- 2025–2026: Develop new tourism, interpretation, and access projects to showcase Scalloway’s unique history and culture.
đź’Ľ Jobs & Economic Growth
- 2029–2030: Plan and secure investment to create spaces and buildings for new businesses — supporting job creation and keeping opportunities local.
⛺ Caravan Park & Active Travel
- 2026–2029: Continue developing facilities at the caravan park to welcome more visitors.
- 2027 onwards:Â Build a safe footpath and cycle link between the caravan park and the village, plus other pedestrian and active travel routes.
⚡ Energy & Sustainability
- 2025–2026: Commission a feasibility study into local energy projects, especially a District Heating Scheme.
- 2025–2028: Explore community ownership of part of the Mossy Hill wind farm.
🚌 Transport & Accessibility
- 2025:Â Investigate community transport needs and create a strategy for improving local connections.

- 2025–2028: Explore new income streams and acquire community assets to strengthen SCDC’s financial base.
🤝 People & Community
- 2025 onwards:Â Recruit more volunteers and directors, and keep listening through regular community consultations.
- 2025: Secure a more visible, inclusive office space as a base for our Development Manager and community activities — with professional designs commissioned.
🗺️ Planning for the Future
- 2025–2026: Update the Scalloway Place Plan and carry out fresh consultation to guide future development.
